Air Traffic Gets a Strong Rebound with Boost in Premium Airline Cabin Booking

The travel industry has been recovering bit by bit after the pandemic and now, premium cabins have a strong bounce back. In Europe, premium airline cabin bookings have reached 90% of the numbers before the pandemic.

In February, the number of premium passengers (both first-class and business travellers) reached 93.1% of the 2019 levels in Europe. Last year, many restrictions were still in place, restricting the number to 56.3% in February 2022, as per IATA’s figures.

Also, according to IATA, the premium sector has observed a faster recovery compared to the regular passenger traffic in Europe and other parts of the world. In Europe, passenger traffic has rebounded in February to 86% of the levels in 2019. Last year, the recovery rate was 60%.

In comparison to the world, Europe’s airline industry has a faster recovery rate while Asia Pacific is the slowest. Things would change soon for the latter with China and other primary Asian-Pacific destinations dropping travel restrictions.

For premium traffic, North America has observed the strongest recovery so far, exceeding pre-pandemic numbers by 8% in February.

IATA stated in an analysis of its latest figures, “These outcomes indicate that demand for premium travel has benefited from the economic recovery and pent-up demand for travel. While it is still unclear if consumer preferences and business travel patterns have been durably affected by the pandemic, the overall trend continues to suggest a positive trajectory for premium class air travel.”
