Athens and Lisbon – Best Valued Destinations for a Break in Europe

Post Office Travel Money’s annual report mentions Athens and Lisbon as the best value destinations for an autumn break in Europe.
For the first time, Western European cities have surpassed Eastern ones in 15 years as per an analysis of 20 popular tourist places.
In Athens, the cost of a weekend break has dropped to €240. This is 15% less than the last 1.5 years than what is it in Paris, where costs inclined by 25 per cent.
Even after the increase in prices, 25% of visitors still preferred the French capital for travel.
The sunshine city of Portugal, Lisbon is second on the list. Here, the average cost of a hotel per night has increased significantly from €43 in September 2021 to €67.
Unexpectedly, the next names on the list include Prague, Riga, Krakow, Riga, and Budapest followed by Rome, Madrid, Dubrovnik, and Berlin. It is the first time Madrid, Berlin and Rome are in the top 10.
The Most Expensive European Cities
As per the survey, Amsterdam and Venice were on the top of the list of the costliest cities. The cost hikes are caused by increased accommodation costs due to a shortage of beds.
On the other hand, prices surged by 20 per cent in 15 of the 20 cities surveyed. There was a sharp increase in Amsterdam (104%), Barcelona (67 %), and Paris (62 %).
However, the prices of eating at restaurants have declined in half of the surveyed cities. The cost of meals for two is the cheapest at €45 in Athens while the costliest at €162 in Stockholm.
If you want to enjoy cultural experiences, the most expensive destination will be Dubrovnik. You would need to spend €66 for visiting a heritage site, a museum, and a gallery.
For the survey, the total trip cost is considered. It includes expenses for a 3-course meal with drinks for two plus a house wine bottle, weekend accommodation for two nights in a three-star place, city transport, and sightseeing.
