SPAIN EXTENDS THE BORDER BETWEEN AFRICAN ENCLAVES AND MOROCCO

Due to the pandemic, the Spanish authorities have decided to extend the border closure between its North African enclaves of Ceuta, Melilla, and Morocco.

The Ministry of Interior announced this decision on Tuesday i.e. November 2. After the announcement, they published an order on the official gazette of Spain (BOE) about the prolongation of the border closure. Now, the border closure will remain in place until November 30 and can be extended.

The two Spanish cities, Ceuta and Melilla, are located in North Africa with autonomous status and have 87,000 and 80,000 residents, respectively. On the north coast of Africa, Ceuta is located and Melilla is located to the northwest of the African continent.

Since March 2020, when the government of Spain declared a state of alarm, the Tarajal border on Ceuta and the Beni Enzar border in Melilla have been shut.

At the starting of the corona outbreak, the persons who could cross the land border between Spain and Morocco were the EU members and Spanish and the people who were travelling for essential purposes.
